Prediction Win-Streak Upended!
Whoo-Boy!  If you'd told me the Hug Hawks would be held to a single score against the Sierra League's No. 3 team, and that Damonte Ranch would take the lead with less than two minutes to play ... I'd have never believed it.  But don't misunderstand.  I'm not saying Damonte Ranch isn't capable, or doesn't have outstanding athletes ... I'm not saying that at all.  It's just that the statistics, spreads, and differing levels of explosiveness for each team (as well as media attention) didn't have any spectators believing the Mustangs could ground the high-flying Hawks in their first round of Regional playoffs.  Some maybe hoping ... but few believing it beforehand.

However on this night the Damonte Ranch Mustangs proved they have the heart of champions and that if you prepare, stay focused, stick to your game plan, and execute properly - you can overcome tremendous obstacles.  Damonte's Coach Tony Amantia already knew that, but no doubt he had to add the task of bolstering his team's confidence throughout the week in addition to his regular duties.  While I normally reserve my accolades for the Lancers, one thing's for sure - whatever the Mustangs did in preparation this week, they did it right and generated a huge win for their school that places them solidly into the Region's 4A football ranks.  Congratulations!

Meanwhile, across the valley at Proctor Hug High, one has to wonder if the Hawks errantly allowed themselves to look beyond the Mustangs and lower their focus somewhat?  I'm confident that wasn't the case for Coach Stallworth and staff, but perhaps some of the athletes were already thinking about Region and State Championships to the detriment of the task at hand.  Unfortunately that has caused numerous teams to stumble, which is why early each season you'll find McQueen football staff reigning in their athletes to reinforce they must stay focused solely on the immediate opponent before them, and then repeat each drill as needed until it becomes part of the athlete's muscle memory and second nature.

But the point is my prediction win-streak is extinguished, and as fleeting as the eastern-bound Zephyr winds that leave nothing behind by which to remember them.   :-(   I'll no doubt make some more predictions in coming days, but for those that truly anticipated this Hug/Damonte outcome ... my hat's off to you!

Colorado's Head Coach Attends Lancer Football Game
Colorado Buffaloes' Head Coach, Dan Hawkins was on hand Friday evening to observe McQueen's game against Spanish Springs and keep his eye on the Lancers' Kyle Van Noy.  Kyle, who routinely plays both sides of the ball for the Lancers as Wide Receiver on offense and Linebacker on defense, already visited the Colorado campus in early October but this allowed Coach Hawkins and his Linebacker Coach Brian Cabral to personally observe Van Noy on the field - staying until the fourth quarter when they had to return home and prepare for their own game Saturday against Iowa State.  I also noted sounds of approval from them as they observed McQueen's sensational leg-man, Anthony Martinez pummel the ball deep into the endzone during kickoffs, and again when the Lancers completed their 99-yard drive downfield to score after Mike LeGrone created a Cougar fumble at the 1.

N.I.A.A. Regional Playoffs Determined For Post-Season
With the conclusion of the 2008 regular football season, the N.I.A.A. has solidified its regional playoff brackets, where the top four teams from each League battle for supremacy on their way to the Nevada State Championship.  In this playoff format, the winning team(s) each week continue on but losers return home to hang up their pads for the year.  Game times are also earlier than usual, so be sure to review the schedule below if you want to see the opening kickoffs.

Date Time Host & Site Visitor
Fri - Nov. 14   7:00pm McQueen Lancers Galena Grizzlies
Fri - Nov. 14   7:00pm Hug Hawks Damonte Ranch Mustangs
Fri - Nov. 14   7:00pm Douglas Tigers Reed Raiders
Sat - Nov. 15h 12:30pm Manogue Miners Reno Huskies

This can be the most anxious and exciting times in high school football as it's a "win-or-go-home" requirement which brings out the best performance in our area's top athletes.  Since the No. 1 team from each league hosts the No. 4 team of the opposing league, both Galena and Reno will have the most to prove as they battle respective Champions.  It may seem a tall order, but both teams are very capable and their respective coaches have pulled surprise upsets in recent history so neither game can be taken for granted.  Should the No. 1 seed come out and play flat or fail to present their best game early on, they could easily find themselves behind at the half and fighting for their lives!  These eight teams represent the Region's best and all should be congratulated for their successful seasons, so strap on your team colors and be there to support your favorites beginning Friday at 7:00pm.

McQueen Lancers Capture High Desert League Title For 2008
In a thrilling game that began with McQueen's opponents scoring on their opening drive against the Lancers' vaunted defense, the boys in blue quickly shook off opening jitters and settled down to the business at hand, grinding out both yardage and scores in every quarter to quickly wrestle control of the game away from Spanish Springs.  In the process, McQueen built it's fifth undefeated regular football season and captured their thirteenth league title, continuing a legacy of success built under the leadership of head coach, Ken Dalton.

Several Lancers once again produced standout performances for the evening, including Phil Sacks who blocked the Cougar's 1st extra-point attempt ... Anthony Martinez who appeared to be a one-man army at times between kickoffs, extra points, pass-interceptions and scores (in addition to his regular running-back duties) ... the always sensational Tyler York, who exploded through the Cougar's lines all evening and added another three touchdowns to his season total ... an underrated Anthony Stolo at Quarterback, who's passing success once again exceeded 75% for 200+ yards and two touchdowns without interception on the night ... and of course Kyle Van Noy, who's one of Nevada's leading college football prospects and could seemingly leap tall buildings in a single bound - assuming there were a football in the air up there for grabs.  This image demonstrates Van Noy's vertical leap against another capable opponent, and if you imagine his arms outstretched above - you can understand why this Lancer brings headaches to opponents and their coaches.

The Lancers now move into the Northern Regional Playoffs and will host Sierra League's 4th-ranked team, the Galena Grizzlies this Friday night at a special 7:00pm kickoff time.  Wear something blue and let's back the Lancers on their march to the 2008 Northern Nevada Championship.

LancerFan's Predictions - My Win Streak Continues!
I have to admit - I haven't been as active on LancerFan with predictions this season as last, having accepted a new I.T. position with a large Carson City company last Winter.  And my weekends are often filled photographing and helping models build their image portfolios, but in the evenings I always try to squeak out fresh content for this site that may be of interest to you readers in between the usual activities of family life.  Though I didn't make predictions for last weekend, my Halloween forecast rang true and final scores were relatively accurate.

Hug was forecast over Elko by 41-7.  Actual was 58-13 for a larger but similar "spread".
McQueen was forecast over Reno 38-6, but they hammered out a 55-7 win.  Even I'm surprised!
Reed got my nod over Spanish Springs 35-13, then cranked it out 41-14. Not bad!
Finally - I anticipated Manogue over Damonte 48-10, and it was 47-13.  My closest prediction!!!

So here are predictions for this coming week and the first round of Regional Playoffs:
  - McQueen will dispatch the Grizzlies, with little of the fight seen in previous years 45-6
  - Hug should command a solid victory over Damonte Ranch 35-7
  - Douglas will be upset on their home turf by an improved and determined Reed offense 24-20
  - Manogue will be sorely tested by Reno's intensity, but will retake the lead in the 4th for a 20-21 win

By my count, that means three of the High Desert League's representatives will move forward, and only the Manogue Miners of the Sierra League will remain.  Agree or disagree?  Email me: jstoll@lancerfan.com and I'll post your thoughts here.

LancerFan Website Repeats A Big Milestone
We've duplicated last year's milestone of serving up more than 200,000 pages of pictures, scores and articles about the McQueen Lancers in a single month!  Guests to Lancerfan.com have included McQueen athletes, family, alumni, friends throughout the U.S.A., and even military personnel in places such as Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Australia.  Unbelievably (to me) the highest activity recorded was more than 32,500 pages delivered in a single day ... yet another record and a huge success for our "small and personal" website.  Incidentally, for you Internet buffs out there - I don't count "Hits" on the website which can provide a false sense of volume.  These were actual page loads to more than 5,500 unique computer addresses checking out the Lancers!

That's exciting to me, and validates why we started LancerFan 8+ years ago.  We don't always hear a lot of feedback on the site but remain confident families and alumni appreciate checking on the boys in blue.  I vacillate when considering LancerFan's future after these many years taking pictures, but numbers of visitors like this are encouraging and rewarding.    Hopefully we can continue evolving until LancerFan is one of the best prep football sites available.  You know what would make it even BETTER?  Your help and suggestions!  Please email us at: jstoll@lancerfan.com with what you'd like to see added, any suggestions, comments or requests ... and thanks for visiting!

Halloween Predictions: Anxiety & Fright for some
Okay - so the majority of games this week are technically not on All Hallow's Eve, but I couldn't resist the catchier headline.  Here's some LancerFan predictions to compare against your own opinions and tomorrow's newspaper results:

1. Hug @ Elko:  Hug will be intent on restoring their game domination and explosive offense after last week's drubbing at the hands of McQueen.  They'll power past the Indians 41-7.
2. Reno @ McQueen:  Perhaps no opposing head coach has better insight and countermeasures against the Lancers than Dan Avansino, who worked as Dalton's assistant for several years.  Although 2008 hasn't been kind to the Huskies, they're a better / tougher team than the scoreboard reveals and Avansino will command a solid battle from his troupes.  The Lancers will prevail 38-6.
3.  Reed @ Spanish Springs: If I couldn't be watching the Lancers tonight I'd head out to Spanish Springs for this.  Both teams are capable, and have strengths against each other - but Reed's speed and aerial assault will prove too much for the Cougars in the second half.  Reed 35-13
4.  Manogue @ Damonte Ranch: This matchup among the Sierra league will test Damonte Ranch's defense to their limit.  Though the Mustangs are far stronger than previous years, Manogue's assault will be far too much for them and the Miner's coach will pound it until the very end.  Manogue  48-10

Regional Playoffs Note: In coming weeks, I foresee Damonte Ranch, Galena, and Carson all going 1 and 1 for their remaining two games which means they'll stay in the same league position as they are now going into the playoffs.  If McQueen also retains it's No. 1 slot among the High Desert League, they would then host Galena in the first round.  I love watching these two teams battle it out and Galena has proven many times over that they can not, and should not be overlooked - regardless of their record.

Slow Start For Highly Anticipated Battle Of Unbeatens
There's an old saying in football that "Offense wins games ... but Defense wins Championships".  On Friday night an unstoppable force met an immovable object, providing a highly anticipated battle in the trenches as undefeated titans met to determine supremacy.  In a game that likely identified the High Desert League champions for this season, defense ruled the evening as each side tried to find a chink in the armor of the other team.  McQueen moved the ball better than Hug in the first half but still had few points to show for their efforts at the break, leading by a meager  6-0.  Although the score was close (creating anxiety for some hopeful Lancer fans), the view of Hug's sidelines late in that first half gave some indication of what was to come.  Hawk players began coming off the field looking exhausted and already spent for the night ... searching for room on the bench to catch their breath.  McQueen's conditioning, stamina, and smash-mouth defense has become a potent weapon in itself through the years, consistently wearing down opponents to the point of breaking.  This night was no exception. Offensive lines are seldom given much ground by McQueen's blue wall of steel and the Hawks had not faced such a physical opponent to date this season.  With the fine-tuning and adjustments Lancer coaching staff made during the break, the Hawks were given little to celebrate the rest of the evening and were held to just a single yard of offense the entire third quarter, then 37 more yards in the fourth, but those were marred by two lost fumbles and two interceptions ... eliminating any remaining threat they held in reserve.  The Lancers went on to generate a decisive 30-0 win and their fourth shut-out of the season, but came away with a few lessons for their continued march towards Regional and (hopefully) State playoff games.  In an uncharacteristic pattern for the night, the Lancers squandered an additional 14 points through a touchdown negated by penalty, missed field goals, and missed extra points.  By the time you read this, those issues will likely have already been addressed and partially resolved, but the Lancers won't count the Hawks out just yet.  Hug has proven themselves  a strong adversary ... far stronger than anyone else to date in the High Desert league, who may progress through their opponents in the Sierra league during Regional playoffs, so it's quite possible we could have a repeat matchup in the Northern Regional final.  And the last time these two teams met for a regional championship ... the Hawks walked away victorious!  Of course, other teams have something to say about that as well, so the Lancers won't take anything for granted!

In a recent game against North Valleys, McQueen's Kyle Van Noy touched the ball a total of five times, generating four touchdowns. Wow!  This night, the calls went Tyler York's way as he rampaged through the Hawks for 176 total rushing yards and four touchdowns of his own.  That "Lighting and Thunder" combination, coupled with the fast and capable running back, Anthony Martinez help generate a complete arsenal of weapons for head coach Ken Dalton to take advantage of in addition to other Lancers not named here, but proven to put points on the board.

Because of the Nevada State Holiday this Friday, McQueen Varsity plays on THURSDAY night  when they'll host the Reno Huskies on home turf.  Wear something blue and let's pack the stands!

McQueen's Kyle Van Noy:  Top-Ranked Division 1 Prospect
The Lancers' Kyle Van Noy has visited a number of Division-1 Colleges in his search for the right fit to pursue academics and his future football career.  The 6' 3", 200lb. athlete is currently focused on the likes of UCLA, Boise State, Arizona Sate, BYU and Stanford University ... and the online recruiting database: Rivals.com has Van Noy ranked among the top 250 players in the country as an All-American candidate, deemed to have pro potential and the ability to have substantial impact for his college team.  Wherever he decides to go, Lancer fans will keep an eye on him in coming years for sure!

2007 Season Highlights DVD Provided To Athletes @ Banquet
After finishing our season-highlights DVD / Slide-show, we decided to donate copies to every varsity player and coach.  We delivered them to the Football banquet this evening (Sunday, Dec. 9th) at Boomtown, and the Boosters graciously agreed to include one with each player's certificate handed out during the ceremony, so everyone gets to go home with one courtesy of LancerFan.com

These are formatted to play on your household's standard DVD/Video player so you can watch them from the convenience of your living room television!  Although fairly long (run time is 19m:56s) it remains easy and fun to watch with motion, zoom, and an energetic soundtrack to help catch some of the intensity that Lancer Football is known for.  If you'd like to purchase an additional copy please email jstoll@lancerfan.com or visit our eStore link.   Ordering should be available in the next 48 hours.

This Years Fans Were Loudest & Most Fun In The Stands Ever!
Our LancerFan website began as a photo gallery and tribute to McQueen's student athletes, and though  that remains it's main purpose, this years student-body crowds and fervent Lancer fans were some of the loudest and most fun I can ever recall.  How could we not turn the camera to the stands at each game and catch the intensity, team spirit and craziness that helped make Friday nights so memorable at McQueen high school?   The cheering, wigs, face paint, plastic bottles & megaphones and loyal support for the boys in blue helped spur your team whenever it was needed ... and McQueen students take second to NONE in team spirit.   You were the best of Nevada, hands down.   Way to go!

McQueen's Marching Band Rallies Team At State Championship
The McQueen Lancers Marching Band joined the football team in Las Vegas for the State Championship against Bishop Gorman's Gaels.  It took a few favors and quick fund-raising by band director, Mr. Moffit and the school's vaunted music squad but at the last minute they were able to pool resources and charter a bus heading South for the game.   This LancerFan ran into the band near the middle-of-nowhere round 2:00am Saturday morning in a gas stop looking rather bleary-eyed but ready to go, and they were in the stands playing well before opening kickoff.

McQueen's Marching Band recently won Nevada's 2007 State Championship in their competition, and were able to play portions of their winning arrangement during half-time to the crowds at Sam Boyd Stadium.  Throughout the season team parents and players alike have expressed their appreciation of the band for the support and rallying they bring to each game.  It just wouldn't have been the same without their contribution at this game, and everyone should make it a point to send a note of thanks their way.  Better yet - they've been invited to march in next season's Tournament of Roses parade.  Help with a small donation and return the support back their way!

Thanks Guys!!!!   Loved listening to you above the crowd and you helped make the day even more special for our football athletes.

DVD SlideShow Being Produced Of The 2007 Season
We're taking our best shots of the season from play action, fans, band, and all the excitement that makes up a McQueen Friday night to produce a slideshow playable on your home DVD and television ... or on any computer with a compatible DVD drive.  We hope to have them available in the week following McQueen's State Championship game (being played this Saturday), and will feature it in our website eStore link.  If possible, we'll also have some on location at the season Banquet being held Sunday, December 9th at Boomtown.

Similar in style to slide shows presented on MySpace - we're currently adding motion, soundtrack and transitions to our images so this keepsake won't look like the stodgy old shows of the 80's and 90's.  It's the perfect gift for your McQueen athlete (or mom & dad for that matter) ... and best of all the charge will be only what it costs to produce & package.  Probably between $6 - $7 each.  Look for a shortened demo version on LancerFan's website early next week!

State Championship Game To Be Broadcast On Live Radio
This Saturday's State Championship game between the McQueen Lancers and Bishop Gorman's Gaels of Las Vegas will be broadcast live on Radio 720am in the Vegas area.  But the exciting part for those of you who can't make the trip to Vegas is that the radio station's website will feature live, streaming audio of the broadcast over the Internet.  To tune in from Reno and listen this Saturday, point your browser to www.kdwn.com then click the link that says "Live Audio".  PreGame show begins at 11:05am with live play by play action starting at the 12:00pm opening kickoff.

LancerFan's Prediction Streak Continues
Well, I successfully predicted a close game with another win for the Lancers, but didn't expect them to be separated by a single point and just a few yards from Galena's field goal range as time expired.   The Lancers stepped up both Defensively AND Offensively in the second half, playing to their potential and turning the game in their favor.  And it's good to see this Lancer squad is resilient when down on the scoreboard, able to come back from behind.  The Lancers traditionally excel at setting both the tempo and successful strategy for any game they play, and this team is certainly no different under the watchful eyes of their experienced coaching staff.  Congratulations on a great turnaround to capture the Regional Championship!

Regional Championship Prediction
Tomorrow night is the Northern Regional Football Championship for Nevada featuring the McQueen Lancers against the Galena Grizzlies.  Set for a 7:00pm kickoff at Damonte Ranch High School (in Southeast Reno), the Lancers will likely be given the West side bleachers since they're the higher seed team between the two ... however I'm unclear if seeding matters when a neutral site is dictated so just look for blue coats and join the crowd!   Although this will be the second meeting in four weeks between these two teams, it may be a very different game from the last.  The Grizzlies have no doubt studied more game footage of the Lancers and restructured their strategy to better combat McQueen after the previous loss, but the Lancers are just now peaking in their intensity and capabilities.

I'm confident McQueen will win another victory over the Grizzlies to claim the Regional Championship - but they'll do it with a smaller margin than their last match up.  Defense will still be the headliner for both teams, keeping scoring relatively low in the range of 14 - 9 or perhaps 21-14 in favor of the Lancers at the buzzer.

Greetings From Lancer Alumni In Santiago, Chile!
My name is Travis Walker (alum '03, #71)
I just wanted to tell you that I have loved your website since I was in school and playing ball, and really appreciate it now that I am working in South America.  Being able to see how the team is doing has been great, and helps me feel like I am not so far from home.

How We Pick Our Featured Image For Page 1
One of my hardest but most enjoyable tasks is selecting the featured photo for our front page each week.  How do we select our website cover-shot?  Well, I'd like to say it's the key playmaker ... or the winning touchdown, block, tackle, etc. of the game, but the fact is we have to sort through images and often choose from those few that best interpret football action or a memorable moment for the evening.

First we'll toss out the ones that are out-of-focus.  Then I set aside those that are unflattering, or embarrassing to someone.  Finally I eliminate those images that coulda-woulda-shoulda been great, such as when the referee jumps in front of me just as I'm clicking my shutter ... or that great action shot occurring about 100 yards away from where I stand - that now I can't even make out in my tiny image.  You get the idea.   And sometimes the perfect shot is just pure luck.  Other times it's careful planning with just a little luck thrown in.  For example - I've been trying to snap a certain action shot of a particular Lancer for the last 3 games.  Concentrating on it, in fact.  But I still haven't succeeded.  When I do,  that will probably be on our front page as well.  Some athletes or cheerleaders haven't seen themselves online much yet.  We've captured virtually everyone at one point or another, but for reasons listed above your image just might not have made it online to date.  We'll keep trying!

After all our filtering, those images left are generally what we post in our photo gallery.  We try to not only capture action from the game, but also the surrounding people and activities that make up McQueen's entire Friday Night experience and hope we're succeeding. Lastly, I review the action shots and pick a fresh view of Lancer football.  It could be anyone, and though we've had a couple repeat names ... we've featured defense, offense, and special teams.  You might be next!!!

Predictions Hold True And I'm 6 for 6
If prognostications had any value in the real world I'd have to charge a dollar for readers to gain access to this page!  Just kidding, but LancerFan is now 6 for 6 in 4A Playoff game predictions - not only regarding who might win but my game notes were surprisingly accurate as well.  McQueen was behind at the half, but pounded out two touchdowns after the break to take the lead and win.  Meanwhile Reno allowed 21 unanswered points in the second half, allowing Galena's offense to simply overpower them even though they remained within a touchdown of success.  So who will take this year's Northern Region crown next week?  Tune in again this Wednesday for my newest forecast.

Friday, Nov. 9th, 2007 @ 11:06am
Do You Believe?
At the beginning of each game once Lancers have donned their gear, changed mindsets, focused on the task laying before them, and begun their field warm-ups ... head coach Ken Dalton rallies his troops in a tight circle, stares into those youthful intense eyes surrounding him and asks "Do You Believe?".  Their thunderous response is a mature, unified "WE BELIEVE" shouted from 67 athletes as they surge towards their leader.  He shouts once again "Do You BELIEVE?" and the sea of Blue & Silver surges even closer, reverberating with another "WE BELIEVE".  And they do!

The McQueen Lancers have their best opportunity in recent years to participate in Nevada's State Championship Football Game this season.  That game is scheduled at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas this December 1st, requiring a road trip for any team or fans from the North.   Several years ago, many parents and boosters found themselves unable to secure last minute flights to Las Vegas once their team made it to the big dance.  They had waited too long, not sure of the season outcome.  Another year for a State semi-final played in the South, many booked their flight for early that Saturday morning, but awoke to 8 inches of snow on the ground and a closed Reno airport.  Although it eventually opened and planes flew, those parents and supporters didn't make it to the game until well after half-time ... and more than a little frazzled from the experience.

Right now, Southwest Airlines is currently featuring a website fare special for only $49.00 each way that Saturday (Reno to Vegas).  For ten dollars more you can fly down the night before and avoid any unexpected snow delays.  Of course seats will go quickly at that special price, so it begs the question:  Do YOU Believe?

This LancerFan has already purchased his!  (www.southwest.com)

Regional Playoff - Round 2 Predictions
This Friday the second round of Regional playoffs features two games:  Reed @ McQueen and Galena @ Reno.  Both are going to be thrillers, and those players not in the hunt anymore will be hard pressed to select which game they watch.  Winners of this round will move on to the Regional Championship, while the other two teams go home and turn in jerseys.

So here's LancerFan's predictions:  McQueen will find itself behind going into the half due in large part to Reed's outstanding aerial attack, but will come back strong after half-time adjustments to contain the Raiders while punishing them on the ground for several touchdowns to gain the lead and eventual win.  Look for the breakthrough midway through the 3rd quarter.   Meanwhile just down the road, Galena will have too many weapons for Reno to contain all night, and will ultimately knock the Huskies from contention.  But don't let my 1-sentence prediction make that sound too easy for the Grizzlies.  Reno has a couple substantial play-makers in their lineup and they'll definitely be in contention throughout the game.  I just don't think it'll be enough to quell Galena's multi-faceted offense.

Freshmen & Jr. Varsity Celebrate At Dessert Night
The McQueen Freshmen and Junior Varsity teams hold their annual season-ending dessert celebration this Monday, November 5th @ the McQueen High School Cafeteria.  Coaches will call up each player individually to recognize their performance with a few words (and photo opportunity) then present certificates and awards for their season performances.  Families are asked to bring a small dessert to share with everyone as the Lancers celebrate another season of success.  Cheerleaders are also recognized and presented gifts from the teams for their efforts on the sidelines as well.  Athletes - please dress to impress!

How'd LancerFan Predictions Stack Up for Round 1?
I'm four-of-four in my predictions regarding round-1 winners in the Northern Regional playoffs.  Well, technically there wasn't a late game rally by Manogue like I'd expected ... but otherwise I had a clean sweep of who and how!   Next week's predictions become tougher, as all 4 remaining contenders appear nearly unstoppable, but only 2 teams will be celebrating in the end.  The 2nd round of Northern Region 4-A playoffs features Reed at McQueen, and Reno hosting Galena.  Now if we could just talk the N.I.A.A. into staggering these games so we could attend both ....

Regional Playoff - Round 1 Predictions
Of the four match ups set for the first round of our Northern Regional playoffs - the High Desert League should have a good showing again this year, and will likely take 3 of the 4 slots advancing into the 2nd round.   Here's LancerFan's predictions:   McQueen will contain the region's rushing leader Chris Castellanos and readily overcome North Valleys ... Reed's aerial assault will outpower Douglas' potent running game to leave the tigers behind ... Galena will run AND throw against Hug, overcoming the Hawks ... and Reno will survive a late Bishop Manogue rally to be the Sierra League's sole representative in round 2 of the playoffs.  Okay - I admit my opinion doesn't have any more factual basis or carry more weight than the next guy's, but this way you can track my record and compare it to your own expectations.  If nothing else, consider my picks fodder to scoff at when reading Saturday morning's RGJ game results.

Ssshhhhh!!!  Don't disagree
Every few years one of the Region's coaches or athletic directors find themselves in hot water for questioning a referee situation or making a comment out of hand.  This time it happens to be Hug coach Rollins Stallworth facing the withering backlash of the N.I.A.A. for a subjective comment regarding a game that occurred LAST YEAR his team was not participating in.  I understand the need for all teams to accept the official's authority on the field and to not undermine them, but am saddened Stallworth's third-party observation is now being dealt with as Darth Vader might respond to a subordinate officer - with an iron fist choking his airway 'til he lay crumpled on the floor.   Ouch!!!!

Herb Hall, the new owner/editor of Nevadaprep.com recently penned an article on this issue that rang home for me regarding the onus and responsibility of reporters.  A writer can focus on any of a dozen angles or story lines when building their article, and care should be given to prevent sensationalizing.  I've had to rewrite numerous drafts over the years myself.  Well, Herb says it best so I'll post a couple excerpts:
An athlete or a coach makes an inappropriate, or off-the-cuff remark, or has something he says taken out of context, and within days, hours or even minutes it’s being broadcast, discussed, dissected and criticized.    ....If in the course of an interview or post-game comments, a coach makes a comment the reporter realizes is going to create a difficult situation for the coach, I think the reporter has an obligation to give the coach an opportunity to consider the ramifications of his statement before everyone else sees it in print.

... I am saying it could’ve - and should’ve - been handled differently.  Had Stallworth’s comment simply been, “There was a key call in that game that had it gone the other way, North Valleys probably would’ve won instead of Galena.”   It wouldn’t have been that difficult to get him to rephrase his quote and in the process save Stallworth’s Hug football team the uncertainty of not knowing if their coach will be on the sideline for tomorrow’s game because of a comment he made with no ill-intent. LancerFan Website Hits Success Milestone
In the month of October, we reached a minor milestone by serving up 200,000 pages of images, scores and articles to visitors.  Guests include McQueen family, alumni and friends from throughout the United States as well as places like Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan and Saudi Arabia where even some military personnel have been able to check in on their athletes while stationed away from home.  Our highest volume was achieved just last Sunday when more than 22,000 page-views were served in 383 distinct visits over a single day!

That's exciting to us, and validates why we started LancerFan 7 years ago.  Though we don't hear a lot of feedback, we're confident families and alumni appreciate checking on the boys in blue when they can't make it to the games themselves.  We plan to continue evolving until we're one of the best prep football sites available anywhere, and always welcome your suggestions.  Email: jstoll@lancerfan.com with what you'd like to see added.  Thanks for visiting!

Dalton's College Roommate Checks In Via LancerFan
(Email from Dave Woolley)
Dear Lancers: Back in the late 1960's, I was a summer roommate of Coach Dalton while we attended Cal Poly together. We lived on a ranch in the area and had some good ol' Dalton wild times: While following the Lancers from here in Clovis, California the last 10 years, I've come up with a few questions:

1. Is Ken still the kind of guy who loves everyone and would do anything for a friend?
2. Family always came first, it appears his and the Lancer family must still be #1 and #2, right?
3. Ken gave 100% to football, I bet today he still gives 100% to the Lancer program.
4. Finally, when Ken first got into coaching, I think I saw one of the first Lancer games at South Lake Tahoe, his love for the kids on that team was evident from that march out to the field, to the final play of the game. To be at McQueen this long, that care must still be there.  That's the Ken Dalton a lot of us knew back at Cal Poly.

Best of luck in the Playoffs, I hope to make a game this time.  Regards to the COACH.

(Editor's Response:  Dave - that sure sounds like the Coach "D" we know.  Thanks for writing, and send us more details about those Cal Poly wild times someday!)

Carson Football Coach Quilling Steps Down
BY MIKE HOUSER
Nevada Appeal Sports Writer

October 30, 2007, 4:01 AM

Shane Quilling spent the last 20 years molding young athletes on football fields and tracks as well as young minds in the classroom.  Now, after seven years as head coach of the Carson High School varsity football team, the 42-year-old Quilling is going to be spending more of his time with his own family.

Quilling - who will continue to teach physical education and health at CHS - told his football team about his intentions on Monday after making his decision to leave the program about three weeks ago.

"It was no one thing - it was a number of things," Quilling said Monday at his South Carson home. "I've been head football coach 10 of the last 11 years. It had a lot to do with my family. All my kids know about me is that I'm gone all the time. That's all they've ever known. One of my kids gets into high school next year. The middle one has serious medical issues. The little one is in kindergarten.

"It had a lot to do with being tired, too. I've given my heart and soul the last seven years to football here. I'm tired. I can't do it anymore."

Quilling and his wife Brenda have three children, Chance, 13, Connor, 9, and Camryn, 5.

"(Leaving) had nothing to do with the season," Quilling said. "I'm not going anywhere - I'm going to retire here. I'm not saying I'll never coach again - just not for right now. I'm never going to be a head coach again. I've done enough. What's been tough is that I've been married 16 years and known my wife for 17 and the only thing she knows is that I'm never home. In the fall, it's always football. I'm never here. I can't do that anymore."

The Senators were 27-43 under Quilling and, after making the playoffs last season, went 2-8 in an injury-filled season this year. Carson played in the postseason three times under Quilling, never advancing past the first round.

Since 1970 Carson - with a student enrollment of about 2,600 - has had 10 winning seasons.

Nevada's N.I.A.A. Realigns Northern Region Leagues
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), which has authority over high school sports across the State, ratified changes this week for Nevada's Northern School Region, realigning the teams within it's two leagues. Under the new lineup, three existing teams from High Desert league (Bishop Manogue, Churchill County, Galena) will now become members of the Sierra league.  In their place three existing members of the Sierra league (Hug, North Valleys, Reno) move to the High Desert.  (See our chart below)

The original realignment proposal, tendered by Galena High, was successfully passed two weeks ago among the Region's athletic directors in an 11-4 voting margin.  It then moved into the hands of it's member school's principals, who were given final say in the matter.  Following consensus from a majority of those principals, NIAA's directors approved the changes this week, which will go into effect at the end of this scholastic year.

The purpose of the realignment was to minimize travel time, costs, and lost class time for participating students.  Effectively they've established each region geographically, with Reno High and all schools North of I-80 designated as the High Desert league.  Schools South of I-80 (other than Reno High) are now clustered together to form the Sierra league.

Only time will tell if these member schools remain content with their realignment, but the athletic directors wisely voted to readdress the region's alignment every four years - coinciding them with NIAA's realignment reviews, which allows the region to easily adjust itself as urban growth or population changes dictate.

On the downside - these changes assure Elko will not get a shortened trip to Fallon, a city which lies 45 minutes closer to it but no longer falls within their league.  And though I imagine teams like Douglas may reap some small benefit by not having to travel an extra 5 minutes across I-80 to reach North Valley's field rather than Wooster's, overall the stated benefits remain a little fuzzy to me.

With so many athletic directors and school principals having reviewed this proposal, examining it's merits and approving the change ... it stands to reason there's positive benefits for nearly all the schools, even if they're less obvious to the general public such as myself.  So although McQueen will miss it's late season face-off against the Grizzlies, Lancer fans should look forward to the new battles that lay ahead, knowing we could still come across Galena in a Regional playoff if both teams make it that far.  Kudos to the region's athletic directors and principals for taking this bold step, and should issues develop because of the realignment - they can always be fixed just four years away at the next review period.
