There was no doubt in the
minds of Lancer athletes Friday evening that each man
suited-up to his left and right was going to bare all
their intensity upon the North Valley Panthers in
McQueen's first league game for the 2010 season.
Standing before them were Nevada Hall of Fame coach Ken
Dalton who led the Lancers for 27 years and commanded
some of Nevada's greatest high school football teams ...
a large contingency of McQueen football alumni greats
... and their own determined coaching staff representing
61 years of football leadership. In a year when pundits
dismissed the Lancers somewhere near the lower levels of
a pre-season rankings garage, the young men standing in
blue uniforms this night were intent on making their own
statement. An announcement they're here to leave their
own mark in Nevada football and McQueen's winning
tradition.
From opening kickoff,
McQueen sent a defensive fusillade at the Panthers,
thwarting their forward progress and relegating the
North Valleys offense to just a pair of lengthy field goals
in the first half. Meanwhile Head Coach Jim Snelling
unleashed McQueen's full arsenal of offensive weapons,
allowing Quarterback Stollo to flex his throwing arm as
an effective alternative to the Lancers powerful ground
attack - something that had been underused in their
first outing against Nevada Union last week. Completing
8 of his 13 pass attempts for nearly 100 yards and three
aerial touchdowns, Stollo spread his attack among 5
different receivers and 9 rushers as McQueen rumbled to
a half time lead 41 - 6 when the Lancers then turned to
their secondary squad for the remainder of the game. |

The Lancers 6'4" Rollins
Stallworth proved himself effective at both offense and
defense as, early in the first quarter, he intercepted a
pass deep in Panther territory to hand ball possession over
to his quarterback. Two plays later Stollo returned the
favor by sending the ball in a low, tight arc firmly back
into the possession of Stallworth's outstretched hands for
the Lancers first score. And for the second week in a row,
Nick Shephard made his presence felt by exploding for a
bruising 206 yards in just 11 carries and two touchdowns
before half time.
Overall, McQueen split their
offense between air, ground, and special teams to acquire
467 offensive yards and eight touchdowns, using six
different scorers on an evening when their home turf was
rededicated as "Ken Dalton Field" in honor of McQueen's former
head coach. Under Coach Snelling's watchful game eye - the
boys in blue placed their exclamation point on the night
with a dismantling of the Panthers, proving that a change in
leadership doesn't have to negatively impact a team's
performance once the right man is chosen to take the helm.
